What JANUMET is used for
Janumet(Generic Name: Sitagliptin–Metformin) is prescribed as a powerful oral medicine to treat type 2 diabetes. Janumet is very useful to control high blood sugar if it is taken properly with exercise and proper diet plan. It may possibly be used with or without other medications to control type 2 diabetes mellitus, but your doctor is the best person to decide that. There are mainly three key aspects that Janumet targets to lower blood glucose level – i) helping our pancreas to produce more insulin, ii) to decrease the amount of excess sugar that is produced by our liver, and iii) it helps our body to use insulin more efficiently that it makes. As a result, it is easier to control high blood sugar all the day even after meals, and it is very unlikely to cause any weight gain or causing hypoglycemia by itself
How JANUMET works
Janumet is a combination of two medications, Sitagliptin (as phosphate monohydrate), a class of medicines called DPP-4 inhibitors and Metformin hydrochloride, a class of medicines called biguanides. Sitagliptin increases the level of Incretins which are protein hormones that is very helpful to control blood sugar as it works by stimulating insulin secretion after eating. Incretins also plays a crucial role to decrease the amount of sugar that our liver makes. Metformin, on the other hand, works by helping to restore the proper response of our body to the insulin that our body produces naturally. Metformin is also useful in decreasing the amount of sugar that our liver produces.
It is very important to control high blood sugar as type 2 diabetes mellitus may cause several serious health hazards like Blindness, nerve problems, Diabetic Nephropathy, several issues with sexual functions, and loss of limbs etc. We can also greatly decrease the risk of heart attack or stroke if we can control diabetes properly.
