Apple Cider Vinegar has become very popular nowadays. We get to see a lot of advertising about it in every media explaining its goodness and various health benefits associated with it. But, is it actually useful? If it is, then how useful?

What is Apple Cider Vinegar?

Apple cider vinegar is formed from cider of apples, so basically, apple cider vinegar is acetic acid. Acetic acid, which makes up the vinegar, also is the key ingredient for Apple Cider Vinegar.

Basically, all types of vinegar are made up of acetic acid. Acetic acid is very strong in undiluted form ( as it can burn your throat ), which is formed by fermentation of all types of fruits, sugarcane, grains etc.

Just like alcohol is made from the fermentation of food, similarly fermentation of all types of food release acetic acid. Even the smell from garbage is due to acetic acid which is formed from the fermentation of food products.


This acetic acid is formed by bacteria called acetic acid bacteria. This bacteria is ubiquitous, it’s present everywhere. It spreads easily through houseflies and all kinds of microorganisms.


The concentration of acetic acid may vary from 5-20% in various types of vinegar along with water and flavor.


Presence of Vinegar in our body


It is present inside our body also. Inside our gut, inside the vagina of females, acetic acid is present along with other acids (like lactic acid).

Vaginal fluid is acidic due to these acids. Acetic acid with other acids has a protective role in the vagina since it has antibacterial property.


The fat and carbohydrates present in our food are also digested with the help of naturally occurring acetyl group ( which is the main component of acetic acid). Acetal component combines with coenzyme A to form Acetyl CoA and helps digests fats and carbohydrates in glycolysis & Krebs cycle inside our body.


The acetic acid bacteria forms Acetic acid and secretes it. From this acetic acid, vinegar is formed.


About its uses and mainly medicinal uses


Acetic acid is very strong. In various industries, it is used as a chemical solvent. To make paints, adhesives, ink, Cleaning agents etc.


Acetic acid is very corrosive in nature. If applied undiluted, it can burn your skin. This is why it is used in diluted form. 1% acetic acid solution is antibacterial. It kills bacteria present on the skin when applied on the skin.


In earlier times acetic acid was injected into cancerous cells to kill them. This was done in the 1800s.


Also, it was used for the screening purpose of cervical cancer. If Acetic acid is simply applied over the surface of the cervix, the area with cancer cells turns white. But this practice is not followed anymore. It is obsolete now. In the present time, there are better tests available to detect cancers more effectively.


As per recommendation of WHO, the diluted form of 1% acetic acid is used as an antiseptic and antibacterial, topically. It is also used for the treatment of the infection of the outer ear. Never apply it inside the ear. It is only recommended to apply on the outer ear. Always consult with your doctor for any type of ear infection before applying it. Never use it by yourself for any medicinal purpose.


Coming to vinegar which is 5-20% acetic acid. Vinegar also has antibacterial properties. So it can be used topically for the outer ear infection and will kill bacteria when applied on any surface.


The scientific truth about it. Whether it’s effective or not in Diabetes and Insulin resistance


As far as studies on vinegar are concerned, a study conducted on rats found that regular use of vinegar in rats showed that the post-meal blood glucose was not as high as it normally would be.


But similar kind effects are not observed with simple sugar or carbohydrates such as white rice, sugar, sweets. This was found effective only with complex carbohydrates such as brown bread, brown rice, sweet potatoes etc.


Vinegar aids in the digestion of complex carbohydrates. And post-meal blood glucose measured 2 hours after the meal is not as high when vinegar was consumed with complex carbohydrates.


And this way HbA1c which tells average plasma glucose for the last three months also decreases.


However, these findings are not consistent. Not seen in all studies. So, things need more research.


This result may be seen because there is a mechanism in our body that also makes acetic acid (acetyl group) for digestion. So there is no doubt that it has a role in digestion.


The same can be said for digestion of fats. Vinegar, when consumed with fatty foods, helps in digestion of fats.


But there is no advantage of taking it separately. Plus it has already been seen as early satiety as a result after taking acetic acid along with food. Thus aiding in weight loss is very little. All these effects are observed.

Acetic acid also has antioxidants like polyphenols such as flavonoids, phenolic acid, aldehydes. All these polyphenols antioxidants protect you from oxidative damage like aging, cancer, etc


But keep in mind that all these properties are also present in other acids like citric acid.


A small amount of acetic acid is also present in fruits. In vegetables also. Thus if you eat all fruits and vegetables, it will also fulfill the requirement of antioxidants that are necessary for your body. That is, if you are taking a good amount of fruit and salad and vegetables in your diet, then you do not need to take vinegar/ acetic acid separately. So, if you take any extra dose of Apple Cider Vinegar, it might not give you that extra advantage what you are thinking.


What is it’s side effects of Apple Cider Vinegar?


Studies reveal that there are many side effects.


Regular use of extra apple cider vinegar(or any vinegar) is seen to deplete potassium stores in our body leading to hypokalemia i.e low potassium which is not good for the heart.


Basically, acetic acid is considered a weak acid. But, it is strong enough to damage your mucosa.


Due to ACV, renin level might get altered in the body leading to water reabsorption problems in the body.


Also, if you use an excess amount of vinegary, it ma results in weakening of your bones.


Thus there are many side effects associated with it. And uses of it is very limited for health benefit & the same is not very well proven.


Please do not stop your diabetes medicines and start only consuming vinegar. This will not control your blood sugar.


If you will follow a proper diet along with your diabetes medicines then your blood sugar will stay in control. So, we can say that the effectiveness of vinegar is not much as it is advertised. There is a very little benefit as compared to the effectiveness of proper diet & regular exercise.


If you get a choice to choose the healthiest from ten options, will you not choose the one that has the maximum benefits? So, please choose a healthy diet & regular exercise to stay healthy and fit.


These days things with less and least benefits are being advertised and promoted as most healthy. So please choose wisely.


The research data and proof behind its uses in Heart disease, Hypertension, and Treatment of cancer


As far as blood pressure, heart diseases and cancer risks are concerned, there is no medical proof that vinegar decreases the risk for such conditions. The risk or such conditions will decrease with a healthy diet, regular exercise and following a good lifestyle.
